Cadillac: The Most Beloved Vehicle Brand
Cadillac, the luxury vehicle of choice, was founded in 1902 and has become the most beloved brand. Here’s why.
Luxury vehicles are always a favorite among drivers and owners. They have second-to-none performance. Their amenities surpass what any lesser vehicle should reasonably have.
And, when you take them on the road, you feel like it’s a one-car parade.
But for all the various luxury brands that exist, one consistently stood out decade after decade – the iconic Cadillac brand.
And it still does.
Cadillac has been at the pinnacle of luxury brands for so long because of its superior engineering, consistent production quality and its innovative designs.
Cadillac: A Brief History
Founded in 1902 by Henry Leland, the brand was named for Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the founder of Detroit.
The brand quickly gained acclaim worldwide. Cadillac took the slogan “Standard of the World,” after it won the Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club of Britain.
In 1910, Cadillac was the first to build passenger cars with enclosed cabins.
Only two years later, it offered a production vehicle with a self-starter and ignition – the Model Thirty. It was the first car to not need a manual crank to start. Cadillac again won the Dewar Trophy, making it the only brand to have ever claimed the award more than once.
In the mid-1920s, Cadillac offered car colors no competitor had thought to use – more than 500. It offered a stark contrast to rival Ford, whose vehicles came almost exclusively in black.
The 1930s saw Cadillac flourish during the Great Depression due mostly to the debut of its V-type 16-cylinder engine in passenger vehicles. This was one of its most iconic engines.
Cadillac halted production of passenger vehicles in 1941 to manufacture planes during World War II. This experience was used in its post-war designs when Cadillac put the first tailfins on its vehicles. Tailfins became commonplace after that.
Power steering was prominently featured in 1950s models. It quickly went industrywide after Cadillac’s success in professional racing. In 1963, Cadillac was among the first to make seat belts standard.
Cadillac rounded out the 1960s by creating these innovations:
Thermostat-controlled heating and air conditioning
In 1970, Cadillac unveiled the Eldorado, an instant classic and an example of how Cadillac combines unparalleled power and unrivaled luxury.
The Cadillac Seville debuted in 1978 and marked a turning point in the use computers and digital displays.
The 1990s saw such Cadillac innovations as:
Fully electronic powertrains
But Cadillac’s biggest splash came with the release of its now iconic SUV, the Escalade.
Cadillac continued to innovate into the new millennium. In 2008, it unveiled an Escalade that was the first full-sized luxury SUV hybrid.
That same year, Cadillac redesigned the CTS, whose strong popularity spurred a vamped-up CTS-V model, the fastest V8 production sedan ever made.
The iconic Cadillac brand shows no sign of slowing in the 21st century.
With a lineup designed to span all lifestyles, the Cadillac brand looks poised to remain at the pinnacle of luxury vehicles for another century.
While older buyers traditionally flock to the Cadillac brand, recent trends suggest younger buyers are turning their attention to Cadillac, too.
Let’s look at three Cadillac models offered in 2019 to better illustrate why the brand has dominated and will continue to dominate the luxury market.
