Cadillac XT4 vs. XT5: Which Luxury SUV Is Your Best Buy?

Is there any greater validation than to shop for a new Cadillac? After all, it’s Cadillac is known as the standard of the world for a reason.
New for 2019 is the XT4, Caddy’s first-ever compact crossover. This segment has seen massive sales growth, and the XT4 is sure to make an impression.
But how does it stack up against the XT5, Cadillac’s midsize SUV? Which offers the best experience? Which is truer to the Cadillac experience?

The brand new XT4 offers the best in American luxury for a burgeoning market.
The compact crossover segment was created with younger car buyers in mind. It offers the safety and ride-height of an SUV in a city-friendly package.
It’s quickly become popular for its combination of safety and fuel efficiency.
There are three available trim levels for the XT4: Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport.
The base Luxury comes with many safety features standard. The Premium Luxury offers more refinement on the finishes, including the front grill, rims and more.
The Sport package has a more athletic appearance and offers a simpler, more aggressive style.
The XT4 looks very much like the younger sibling of the XT5. Compared to the SUV, it has:
- Shorter wheelbase
- The XT4 is narrower
- Slightly lower roof
However, it still offers plenty of passenger space. There’s more headroom in both the front and rear. It has the same amount of total legroom as the XT5, although front legroom is slightly smaller.
The XT4’s smaller size does impact its storage space. It has 22.5 cubic feet overall with rear seats up. Lowering them increases that to 48.9 cubic feet.
With a smaller engine bay, the XT4 features:
- A 2.0-liter inline-four engine
- It produces 237 hp and 259 lb.-ft. of torque
- It goes from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds
A nine-speed automatic transmission keeps the revs in the right power band. Front-drive is standard, but all-wheel-drive optional.
Stopping the XT4 is a new “Electro-Hydraulic Braking Assist” system. Essentially a smaller, more fuel-efficient design, the system brings the XT4 from 70 mph to a stop in just 127 feet.
Already equipped with a small but powerful engine, the XT4 uses cylinder deactivation to further increase fuel efficiency. This makes it good for 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
The XT4 starts at $34,795 for the Luxury model. Both the Premium Luxury and Sport lines start at $39,925. Add-ons like the Trailering Package are available at extra cost.
The XT5 replaced the popular SRX in 2016. It’s now Cadillac’s best-selling vehicle. With its combination of luxury and utility, it competes well against its up-scale competition from Germany and Japan.
Owing to its longer availability, the XT5 offers four different trim levels – Standard, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum.
The entry-level Standard is luxurious enough to justify the Cadillac name. But the other levels offer far more options. All are powered by the same engine.
The Platinum stands out for coming in all-wheel-drive, unavailable on the others. It also has a heads-up display that shows the instrument cluster against the windshield.
SUVs have been a market-winner for decades. Drivers love the size and cargo space offered by these high-riding alternatives to cars. This has now made SUVs, not sedans, the go-to body style for buyers.
The XT5 is a high-end SUV that emphasizes luxury without sacrificing driving dynamics. It strikes an imposing figure with its sharp creases and distinctive head and tail lights.
As a midsize SUV, the XT5 exchanges passenger room for cargo space when compared to the XT4. While not cramped, it offers 30 cubic feet for cargo with the rear seats up. Drop the rear seat and that grows to 63 cubic feet.
The larger XT5 houses a 3.6-liter V6. It’s good for 310 hp and 271 lb.-ft. of torque. Despite its heavier weight, the bigger engine propels the XT5 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.
Front-wheel-drive is standard while AWD remains an option. An eight-speed automatic transmission throws its gears.
With a more traditional braking system than the XT4, the XT5 brakes to a standstill from 60 mph in 111 feet.
Owing to its larger size, the XT5 is thirstier than its little sibling. It gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
In at a class higher, the XT5 commands a bigger price. The Standard model starts at $41,695, the Luxury at $48,495 and the Premium Luxury at $54,195. The Platinum starts at $65,895, which befits how well-equipped it is.
Of course, there are additional packages available, including a trailer hitch setup, a cold weather package and others.
XT4 vs XT5: The Verdict
Since they serve different purposes, comparing the Cadillac XT4 vs XT5 isn’t apples to apples. Each vehicle excels at its intended purpose.
The XT4 offers a city-friendly size perfect for most day-to-day needs. It compares well with similar competitors.
But for all its strengths, the XT4 is limited by its smaller size. While a perfect “second” car, some buyers may find it won’t meet all their needs.
The XT5 offers greater utility in a bigger, more powerful package. Where the XT4 offers decent space, the XT5’s cargo area can accommodate almost any need. And its larger engine and greater power output make it more appropriate as a touring vehicle.
So if cargo space isn’t a concern, the XT4 offers plenty of power in an attractive, high-end package that should serve most people’s day-to-day needs. Its larger sibling, the XT5, is designed to serve them all.
